Religion

Religious beliefs manifest themselves on the landscape in an amazing number of ways. Churches, temples, shrines and other houses of worship are obvious landscape elements shaped by religious practice, but so too are cemeteries, place-names, and landscapes devoted to religious holidays. Other landscape features are subtly affected by religious beliefs as well. Consider for example the types of food and drink establishments that serve alcohol or pork barbecue, and entire agricultural landscapes dedicated to the production of religiously sanctioned food and drink.

The photo collection below documents many of the religious landscapes in North America, plus some European antecedents, as well as the odd spaces where the sacred and profane share space on the landscape.
