Politics and Power

The struggle for, and exercise of, power is written into the landscape in myriad fashion. Some of the landscapes of politcal power are obvious, like Greek Revival courthouses and government buildings, but the inscription of power on the landscape is nearly ubiquitous. It is evident in the cadastral patterns that manifest themselves in neat rows of corn in the Midwest as well as the grid of streets in Los Angeles' vast suburban enclave in the San Fernando Valley, and the Village Greens in Vermont. Statuary and monuments to war and peace also figure prominently in the both the nation-building and national grieving processes that figure heavily into the construction and maintenance of competing national identities.
