How to Create and Maintain a Site on the Web
There is no quicker and easier way to share information with folks than with a web site (though Blogs are pretty good too), and building and maintaining a web site for free has never been easier.
This is just a quick list of links for now... but it should be enough to get you on your way....
:-)
All you need is a Google ID and you are ready to go.
The on-line web builder and editor is remarkably easy to use. If you can surf the web and use a Word Processor, you can build and maintain a web site here.
Amazingly enough... this is an "ad free' service as well. Astounding really.
This is a free service (for now anyway), and Google offers a lot of other free services too... including:
On-line Document Creation and Storage
Get a 2nd Phone Number... free!
Make free phone calls over the web
Send SMS (text) messages from your PC
but I have gotten some complaints about spam on these two
Typical popular IRC client, similar to Yahoo! Messenger
Allows voice only chat
No web cam necessary, but you can use one.
This is the only chat client I know that does this.
Google offers quite a few other services and products... most of them are free (for now).
My concern is that Google is going to be the Wal-Mart of the web/computer industry... offering lots of great free stuff at first, taking a major control of the industry... then making everyone cow down to their standard, drive everyone else out of business... and then start charging for their services.... But I do tend to be a tad pessimistic at times. :"> For now I'm hoping that they will keep all their current free services free, while continuing to adhere to the high standard they use now.
I've used this service a few times, and helped a friend with a site here. I think it is a very good service.
The free hosting does put ads on your site, but they are very minimal, from what I've seen.
You end up with a very simple URL with this service.... i.e.: webs.com/your-name
There are 100's, maybe 1,000's of free sites out there. You just gotta do your homework (like this), cross your fingers, and pick one.
The biggest trick I think is finding one that end up giving you a simple, practical, and efficient URL.
This is a very popular alternative to a traditional website, and may be worth considering.
You need to dig a bit to setup a unique username to personalized site/page ID, but it can be done.
