Gunner William Jones

Gunner William Jones 977 840653 enrolled with the 4th South Midland Brigade of the RFA on 21 April 1915. I am very grateful to his grand daughter for sending me the photographs he preserved and an extract from the life history he wrote aged 95 years..

My Grandfather was a Gunner with this Regiment from 19th April 1915 – 2nd. March 1919. He was born on 28th. August 1893 in Gilmorton, Leicestershire. In France he was in D/106 Brigade. He lived most of his life in Coventry and died there in 1990 at the age of 96 yrs.

This envelope was addressed to Jones at the front by Mrs Alice Bugg, the mother of 2nd Lt Herbert Bugg of the same unit, D Battery 106th Brigade, who had been killed in action, 19th July 1918.

Below are the gunners of the 4th South Midland Brigade.

Please scroll down for further pictures of the gunners with whom Jones trained and the army horse with which he worked once the war was over.

His brief memoir written in old age suggests that his gift with the horses was not unappreciated by officers at the front.

After the war William Jones applied to the army and was given the use of an army horse with which he established his haulage business in Coventry.
