The Officers - Army Lists

This page lists Officers of the 4th South Midland Brigade as published in the Army Lists for October 1914 and May 1916.

The changing attachments of the 4th South Midland Officers help to clarify the deployment of their men and howitzer guns after May 1916 and during the Battle of the Somme.

The artillery reorganisation gave numbers to the Royal Field Artillery Brigades at the front but the Army Lists continued to list the Brigades under their old names as South Midlands Territorial Brigades.

Most of the First Line officers went out to the front on 30 March 1915 and, as explained on the Home Page Brigade History, most of them served at the front with the devolved South Midlands Brigades: 240, 241, 242 and 243 Brigades.

Second Line officers listed as being in 4th South Midland Brigade are likely to have served in 308th Brigade in 61st Division until it was broken up 16-17 May 1916. Two batteries then went to 306th Brigade as D Howitzer battery of that Brigade. Research into records by Prof. Richard Flory (to whom I am grateful for information about officers in the artillery) shows that several officers listed with 4th South Midlands served with 306th Brigade. Second Line officers from 1st S Midland Brigade served at the front in 305 Brigade, from 2nd S. Midlands in 306 Brigade and from 3rd S Midlands in 307 Brigade of the RFA.
