Reading List: Pre-study is not essential for CIP courses, but may be very helpful for some people. Here are some reading suggestions that might be used.
Books
1. 'Protective Coatings - Fundamentals of Chemistry and Composition' by Clive Hare, SSPC publication 94-17. This is a detailed and complex book, but possible the best text on the subject of coatings. You may not want to know this much chemistry
2. 'Corrosion Prevention by Protective Coatings' by Charles Munger, NACE publication 37507. This excellent publication covers every aspect of coatings technology without being too complex. Each participant in CIP Level 2 is given a copy of this book as part of the course.
3. 'The Inspection of Coatings and Linings' SSPC 97-07. This is a handbook for all users that are associated with inspection.
4. Using Coating Inspection Instruments' by William D. Corbett, published by KTA-Tator, Inc. (www.kta.com). It does what it says on the cover, and describes in detail how to perform tests or make measurements.
Journals
1. Materials Performance: NACE's own technical Journal (www.nace.org)
2. JPCL (Journal of Protective Coatings and Linings) SSPC's journal (www.paintsquare.com/jpcl/)
3. PCE (Protective Coatings Europe): Associated with JPCL with news and articles specific to the European market (www.mpigroup.co.uk/publishing/protective-coatings-europe/)
4. Coatings Pro Magazine: Published by NACE International (www.coatingspromag.com)
Reading journals such as these will help you to keep up with developments in the industry. Some of these can be found online, particularly for members of the relevant organisation. It is worth reading as diverse a set of publications as possible if you want to be 'in touch' with the coatings world.
Internet
There are too many internet resources available for anyone to know them all. For any specific subject, you can often find data by searching for the terms, and sometimes find film on the same subject by searching in 'YouTube'. Resources that are specific to our subject matter include:
1. www.paintsquare.com. Register, at no charge, for access to many coatings resources
2. www.techstreet.com. Provides a store which allows you to check the titles and publication statu of all kinds of standards, and - of course - a facility to purchase copies with the aid of a credit card.
Books and publications can be obtained from the organizations concerned. Copies of journals are often published on-line. Try www.nace.org, and www.sspc.org first.
