Answers to your questions
What happens if I fail a CIP written or practical examination?
If you fail an examination at either CIP Level 1 or CIP Level 2, it is possible to resit the examination for a reduced fee without attending the course again, provided that a) the resit takes place within 12 months of the failure, and b) BOTH parts of the examination (practical and written) are retaken. An examination fee applies. Only one resit attempt can be made in this way.
What happens if I fail to reach a passing grade (i.e.70%) with the Level 1 Logbook?
You must take CIP Level 1 again to create another (better!) logbook. All exams must be retaken.
Can I register for CIP Level 2 without taking CIP Level 1 first?
No.
What does 'NACE Certification' mean?
After successfully taking a NACE Certification Course, you will be recognised as an 'industry professional'. There are many categories, of which CIP represents three (3) main certification levels, CIP Level 1, CIP Level 2, and CIP Level 3. There are, in addition, some 'add-on' qualifications related to specific industries, e.g. marine, bridge or nuclear. Other specialities are planned.
How long does Certification last?
Certification lasts for three years; after that, it ends, unless it is renewed. After that, the certification lapses. If not renewed when appropriate it will cease to exist, and you will have to start the whole process again. DO NOT LET YOUR CERTIFICATION LAPSE - unless you are retiring from the coatings industry.
Do I have to take a course again when my certification runs out?
No. Within 2 months of the certification expiring, you must renew your certification, using an application form that NACE will send. To be sure this can happen, check that your current contact details on your NACE profile are correct. You can also renew certification by taking the next CIP course up the ladder (e.g. if your certification level is level 2, you could take level 3).
Can I take Peer Review (CIP Level 3) immediately after CIP Level 2?
Yes, provided you already have enough experience points. To work this out, try filling out the Peer Review experience forms (see CIP Level 3 page). You must have 36 points minimum at the time you register for Peer Review.
Can I take CIP Level 2 in the UK - I did my CIP Level 1 in the USA?
You can take any element of the course at any location, subject to agreement with the local licensee. NACE must recognise that you have successfully passed the earlier course.
The NACE website says that a course is a 'licensee' course. Does that mean it is private and restricted?
Most CIP courses outside of the USA are operated by companies operating under license, on behalf of NACE International. These licensees are required to operate the courses under NACE rules, and all CIP courses are operated in the same way. Transocean Anti-Corrosion Ltd. is NACE licensee for CIP courses in the UK.
What is the Dress Code for NACE courses?
All NACE courses have a dress code policy which is stated as‘casual’, and we certainly want you to be comfortable during the training. At the same time, please recognise that we will be in a professional training environment.Blue jeans and (polite) t-shirts are acceptable; track suits, hoodies and sleeveless shirts are not acceptable. Please help us to maintain reasonable standards in what, after all, is a training environment for a professional qualification.
Students can reinstate their certification for an extra fee, with appropriate work experience (as required for renewal at any time). If they go 1-3 years over the expiration date, the extra fee (on top of the renewal fee) is $100, if they go over 3 years but are under 5 years, the fee is $500. After 5 years they must start the program over.
What is a NACE Profile?
An account is created on the NACE computer system that contains information that you have provided when registered for a course. The information is password protected. The most common login information requires two bits of information, your ID and a password. These are generally created with your NACE membership number as the ID, and your email address as the password. The password can be changed.
I can't access my Profile, what should I do?
You must contact NACE to get the login information. Send an email to 'firstservice@nace.org', or call +1 282 228 6200
