2009 Season Recap:
2009 20BuckHuntClub Big Buck Contest winner. Mike Guzik
Saturday 11-21-09: Opening Day Mike Guzik Beat Joe Shiners Buck. The buck was about 60 yards away in a lane at 8:10am and Mike fired. The buck went down after a couple more shots he was finished.
This Buck measures 87.5" Nice Job Mike!!
Saturday 11-28-09: Joe Shiner shot a nice Doe in Cuba NY with the rifle. Joe is still in the lead this year with his 75.1" 8pt. I am not giving up! Joe and I have a final day of the Muzzle Loader season hunt planed together on 12-22.
Saturday 11-28-09: Angelo Infantino shot a huge doe on his property in Wyoming, NY. Around 3pm this ma ma came in with her 3 fawns. She was very nervous. Angelo waited for his shot and dropped her in her tracks. Nice shooting! Angelo claims she was bigger than the one I got in the morning but I'm not sure I believe him.
Saturday 11-28-09: Me, Dave D. Shot a huge Doe. I was hunting with Angelo at his property in Wyoming NY. We got in good and early. There is always a lot of action here on the second Saturday of the season because there is a lot of pressure on the neighboring properties. We heard a lot of shot all around us. Angelo was in the creek run off stand and I was in the road stand. At about 9:10am Angelo texted me to tell me he was getting down to confirm the neighbors were not shooting across the creek onto his property. About 2 minutes later I heard 2 shots from his area. I grabbed the muzzle loader and 6 does bounded in. I saw one was clearly bigger than the rest. I raised the gun and whistled to get them to stop. They were took several more bounds then stopped about 20 yards away from my tree. Now the tree was in my way I had to swing my gun to the other side of the tree. Luckily I did not make any noise and they did not see me. I took aim and fired at the big doe. they all ran away. I hung up the muzzle loader and picked up the shotgun. I raised the shot gun and the big doe stopped at 80 yards in a clear lane. I took the safety off and was just about to fire when she bedded down. I saw her head raise up and down a few times and she expired. I hit her perfectly with the first shot. It has been a good year so far, a doe with the bow, a 8pt with the shotgun and this doe with the muzzle loader. Thanks again to my pro guide Angelo!

Saturday 11-28-09: Doc CJ (not in our contest) Shot a great 10pt. Doc is a land owner in Auburn NY. Dick Borza hunts with him. He is adamant about Quality Deer Management and it shows. Check out this great Buck.
Wednesday 11-25-09:
Josh Borza (not in our contest) Killed a GREAT 7 pointer. This day was Josh's first Big game hunting day of his life. They hunted a different spot on the same property in the morning then Dick had to talk Josh into returning for the evening hunt. Josh was near a pine stand in Auburn with his Dad Dick. The plan all day was, if the big one gave them a shot Dick was going to shoot it. They were on the ground in folding chairs. Josh told his Dad he could hear something behind them in the pines. Dick said don't worry about it it's squirrels then Dick looked back and saw the buck. Josh both thought this was a smaller 8pt. Dick had a clear shot with his muzzle loader and was ready to take the shot when Josh said can I take him Dad and of course Dick said yes. Dick froze while they waited for Josh to have a clear shot. Josh had his gun up and the deer needed to take a few more steps. Dick was saying shoot, shoot. When Josh had a clean shot he pounded the deer at 25 yards. Josh said did you see the rack on him? That is when Josh realized this was the big one the property owner had been seeing. They went to the edge of a swamp and decided to back off for the night. In the morning they grabbed Josh's Godfather, Uncle Gary and went to recover the deer. Great First Hunt Josh! This is a great memory for you and your Dad to share for life!

Wednesday 11-23-09: Pat Duggan killed a doe in naples. Sweet Meat!
Sunday 11-21-09: I, Dave D. killed an 8 pointer on the hill in Honeoye basically in the same area that my brother Dan killed his 7 pointer the day before. We dropped in at the top of the hill before dawn. I forgot my phone and my watch so I did not know what time it was. I sat the first few hours of the morning up high then I started hunting my way down the hill. I was supposed to meet the guys around 10:30am at the bottom but I was late and since I was I got a shot. I heard a noise at the top of the other side of a ravine. I saw a deer so I mover for my gun and I bumped my pocket and mad a noise when my shotgun shells clanged together. The deer froze and I froze. after a short stand off the deer committed to entering the ravine. I saw it was a small spike horn with a better buck behind him. The spike got to the bottom on the ravine, turned up towards me and stopped 30 yards away from me, I think he smelled me. He tuned away and went through an open lane at 40 yards away. I lined up in the lane and when the bigger buck was entering the lane I whistled twice and he stopped. I fired and he arched his back and bounded up the opposite side of the ravine. When he got to the top he folded and rolled, slit and tumbled for about 80 yards down to the bottom. Check out the video. When Al pulled the truck in he was bitching at me for being late. As I was dragging the deer I said "I've been busy"! Great Hunt.
Opening Day Shotgun Saturday 11-21-09: Joe Starks shot a doe and a 3 pointer ("thought it was a doe") at the Conge line. He saw a lot of action there. Nice shooting Joe!
Opening Day Shotgun Saturday 11-21-09: Joe Shiner shot a big doe. This doe had a very light brown coat with a white spot on her back and a white belly. While they were hooking this doe and a buck up that another guy shot to the back of the 4 wheeler they saw a big buck. Joe's rifle was about 30' away and he missed a chance to shoot the deer. Lessons learned, when in the woods during the season always be ready!
Opening Day Shotgun Saturday 11-21-09: Dan D. Took a nice 7 pointer on the hill in Honeoye. He took a shot thru a small window at about 7:30am. The deer was about 50 yards away and he dropped it in its tracks. This buck measures 66", Shiner is still in the lead. Nice Shooting!
Saturday 11-07-09: Marc Lodico Shot a Buck. This was the first sit of the season for Marc. He was in the stand 5 minutes when this buck came in. He made a great shot and took the deer home. The deer measured 72.5" so Joe Shiner's Deer is still in the lead for now.
Here he is.
Sunday 11-01-09: I shot a Doe today. I was in spot in Ogden my buddy Jeff's dads house. Nothing was moving until 5:05 I heard deer moving. It took them forever to get to me. I was running out of daylight when the doe was in the shooting lane I let the arrow fly. She was only 12 yards from the tree and I placed the arrow perfectly. I found my arrow in the ground where she was standing covered in bright red blood. I backed out and waited for Jeff, his son and my son to get there. My son was so excited to get on the track. We went after her about an hour after I shot her. We showed the boys how to take their time and follow the blood. After about a 15 min track I raised my flashlight and said there she is. She is not very big but my son was psyched! he held her leg while I gutted her and we got her out of there. We did about 30 hi-fives.....I think he is hooked!
Saturday 11-31-09:
Well the deer season in Texas is on and I have a positive update after weekend 1:
Saturday and Sunday this past weekend were open for the youth rifle season (17 and under) and was also the last weekend of bow season before the start of the regular rifle season this coming Saturday. Todd and I took his 13 year old boy (Graham) out to the lease for the weekend. I hunted with the bow, Graham hunted with the .300 Winchester Mini Mag, and Todd sat on his thumbs and hunted vicariously through his son.
Obviously, having gotten the lease a little late, Todd and I were unsure about the deer population in the area. I did see quite a few deer during the spring turkey season, but I could've been seeing the same deer each weekend for all I knew.
Saturday morning brought almost perfect weather conditions for good deer movement. The morning temperature was around 35 degrees, and there wasn't a single hint of wind. Although I prefer overcast skies, they were clear and it was crisp. I told Graham Friday night that I fully expected good deer movement in the morning based on the weather and the deer did not let us down.
At first light, I could barely see my feeder from my ladder stand which is in the woods about 125 yards away. Tough with the bow but I would rather not hunt right at the feeder, and am just hoping they move through my area on their way to/from the feeder. The feeder went off and I saw some silhouettes running away from it in the clearing. At first I thought maybe jack rabbits but 5 minutes later, I saw a nice doe walking back to it. She jumped the barb wire and continued feeding. 5 minutes later she looked up and stared nervously to the north. I glanced over and sure enough here comes a real pretty 4 pointer with a decent body and a perfect little rack. The doe spooked and the buck took her place at the feeder and went to town on corn for at least 30 minutes before he moved off in the opposite direction. About 15 minutes later, a doe and two fawns came in and stayed at the feeder for about 45 minutes then moved off and finally 15 minutes after that another doe which stayed for 30 minutes. All in all I had deer in my line of sight from first light until almost 9 AM.
Up at the box blind in the center of the ranch, Todd and Graham settled in. The box blind is around 105 yards from directly under the feeder, hidden nicely in a big clump of thick cedar elm. The morning started slow but certainly didn't stay that way. Around 8:30, a doe and two fawns were moving toward the feeder from the south and Graham spotted them. Unfortunately when Graham alerted his father to the fact that deer were coming, in his excitement, he also alerted the deer that he saw them coming. He got to experience what we all do at that age.....white flags bouncing away in the opposite direction. About thirty minutes later, he spotted two bucks out the south window of the blind, but that direction is very thick so they were unable to determine how big they were. The county has the antler restriction which allows for two bucks per hunter....either two spikes (at least one tine has to be a minimum three inch spike) or one spike and one buck with at least a thirteen inch inside spread. Eventually they moved off without being completely identified as anything other than bucks. But, a few minutes later, here he came, up a trail that Todd and I had identified as a possible well used route to the feeder and we were right. A good buck, straight to the feeder, jumped the fence and started munching. Graham got the rifle up and pointed without any direction from Dad and after a heart pounding 3 or 4 minutes for Todd, his boy clicked off the safety. Amazing how good deer can hear as Graham found out when the buck lifted his head and stared right at the blind. With Todd knowing the deer was about to bolt, he was screaming "SHOOT!!!!" in his head as Graham continued to take aim. But the buck did not bolt to Todd's surprise....he put his head back down and BOOM. The round hit him square in the chest, penetrating both lungs and allowing the deer to take only one step before subsequently hitting the dirt. A great shot for the kid and as clean a kill as you can hope for. He turned out to be a nice 8 pointer with a 15 inch inside spread and just a beautiful deer for a 13 year old.
We saw a few more small bucks and a handful more does before the weekend ended and are confident we saw around 5 or 6 different bucks and 9 or ten different does. Not bad for our first weekend out there!!
Congratulations to Graham for his best deer yet and thanks for putting some venison in the freezer so dad can wait for that 160 class big boy!!
All the best and good luck to everyone this year, Craig

Monday 10-19-09: Joe Shiner put a Buck on the board. Joe hunted the morning in Perinton, as he watched and photographed a 3 pointer this 8 pointer came in. He put his camera away and made his move while the 3 pointer was right under him. Joe waited for his shot, when the deer jumped a log Joe drew his bow. The buck leaped into the only lane he had at 30 yards away and Joe let the arrow fly. He placed the arrow perfectly for a double lung shot. The Buck only went 40 yards.
This Buck measures 75.10" Nice Job Joe!!
Sunday 10-18-09: Mike Guzik arrowed one for the freezer. Second year with the Bow and a second deer. Nice shooting Mike.
