If you want to go to a 4-year college or university straight from SVHS, you'll need to take either the SAT or the ACT. Any college in the U.S. will accept either test for admission, so it's advised that you prepare for and test for the exam that is better for you.
How to start?
Take a practice SAT and a practice ACT to compare. SAT practice tests are available at https://www.collegeboard.org/ and ACT practice tests are available at https://www.act.org. If possible, you should take full-length exams for both of them to get a real feel for the timing and length of these tests. Once you know on which test you score better, prepare for that one! If you're even on both, take the test on which you feel more confident. And remember... prepare. These tests count, and you want to do your best!
It is recommended that Juniors take the SAT or ACT in the spring of their Junior Year! The SAT is offered 7 times per year and the ACT is offered 6 times per year. Take the test for the first time junior year--don't wait. If you do not officially test until senior year and you end up with scores that you don't like... you have less time to prepare and test again before you apply to college.
