David nodded, fighting back tears. "Yes, Mrs. Hannah. I took it off during P.E. and put it in my bag. It was there during the first period, but now it's gone!"
The teacher's eyes scanned the room. She knew these children; they had been under her guidance since the beginning of the school year. Surely, no one would do such a thing. Yet the missing wristwatch said otherwise.
"Class," she began in a calm voice, "I want everyone to sit up straight, close your eyes, and place your hands on your desks. I am going to come around and check each student's bag."
