A Lesson Beyond the Pages: Trust Over Locks

Back in 2010 or 2011, Rachana Gupta joined us in the HR department. As a gesture of welcome and encouragement, I gave her a copy of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

The next day, she came to me, visibly upset. The book had disappeared from where she’d kept it at home. I assured her it was okay and asked the Stores to issue another copy.

But the following day, she came again—this time in tears. The second copy was missing too.

It was clear someone was trying to disturb her.

I asked the Stores to issue a third copy and told her gently:

"Let them take it. Let them take every copy they want. They’ll eventually lose interest when they can no longer disturb you. But if they’re taking it to read, then the book is doing its job."

Why did I do it?

To restore trust. To send a quiet but strong message that we won’t let fear take root in our space.

We believe in an open culture—nothing is kept under lock and key in this company. Then why should someone need to lock up a book?

If we start locking up books, ideas, or intentions, we’ve already lost something more important than paper—we’ve lost our values.

Sometimes, a small act of faith can defend the foundation of a culture. That day, it wasn’t about the book. It was about trust. And trust must never go missing.

सन् 2010 या 2011 की बात है। रचना गुप्ता हमारे HR विभाग में शामिल हुई थीं। उन्हें स्वागत और प्रोत्साहन देने के लिए मैंने The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People नामक एक पुस्तक भेंट की। यह सिर्फ़ एक किताब नहीं थी, यह एक संदेश था—कि विकास की शुरुआत भीतर से होती है।

अगले दिन रचना मेरे पास आईं, चेहरे पर चिंता साफ़ झलक रही थी। उन्होंने बताया कि किताब उन्होंने घर ले जाकर रखी थी, लेकिन सुबह तक वह गायब हो गई। मैंने मुस्कराते हुए कहा, “कोई बात नहीं,” और स्टोर्स से एक और प्रति निकलवाने को कहा।

फिर अगले दिन वह फिर आईं—इस बार आँखों में आँसू थे। दूसरी प्रति भी कहीं गायब हो चुकी थी।

यह अब संयोग नहीं था। साफ़ था कि कोई उन्हें परेशान करना चाहता था। लेकिन डर या शक से प्रतिक्रिया देने की बजाय, मैंने स्टोर्स से तीसरी प्रति निकलवाने को कहा। फिर मैंने रचना से शांत स्वर में कहा:

“उन्हें लेने दो। जितनी कॉपियाँ लेना चाहें, लेने दो। जब वे देखेंगे कि तुम्हें इससे फर्क नहीं पड़ता, तो परेशान करना बंद कर देंगे। और अगर वे पढ़ने के लिए ले जा रहे हैं, तो फिर किताब अपना काम कर रही है।”

मैंने ऐसा क्यों कहा?

क्योंकि मुझे पता था कि असल में दांव पर क्या है—विश्वास।

शुचिता प्रकाशन में हम खुलेपन में विश्वास रखते हैं। यहाँ कुछ भी ताले में बंद नहीं रहता—न अलमारी, न सोच। अगर हम किताबों, विचारों या अपने इरादों को ताले में बंद करने लगें, तो हम सिर्फ़ चीज़ें नहीं खोते, हम अपने मूल्य खो देते हैं।

उस दिन बात किताब की नहीं थी—बात उस माहौल की थी जो हम बनाना चाहते हैं। ऐसा माहौल जहाँ डर चुपके से जगह न बना पाए। जहाँ विश्वास के छोटे-छोटे क़दम हमारी संस्कृति की नींव को मजबूत करें।

और विश्वास?

विश्वास तो कभी खोने नहीं देना चाहिए।
