Some of our literacy goals include:

Reading- Read every day! You can read to your child and your child can read to you. Ask your child's teacher for their reading level and find "just right" books at pioneervalleybooks.com (see the link below).

Writing- Write every day! Make books. Write fiction, nonfiction, and "All About" books. Take it slow and write a sentence a day. Don't forget to add pictures and labels.

Listening and Speaking- Listening to stories and discussing who was in the story, where did the story happen, what was the problem, and how did the characters feel. Comparing and contrasting two similar stories (different versions of fairy tales) is another great way to talk about books.

Phonics- Listen for all sounds in a word, listen for just beginning or ending sounds, practice rhyming, practice popcorn words (sight words), practice hearing and making blends/consonant clusters at the beginning of a word.

Fun activities to try at home:

• "I'm going on a trip and I am packing things in my suitcase that begin with the letter B. What should I bring?"
• Watch/listen to a read aloud. Click on link #6 below, labeled read aloud. Follow the directions/demonstration at the end of the video to make your own word tree. You will need paper, scissors, a writing utensil and either glue or tape.
• Reading Challenge Bingo! Click on the link below (#7). If you are on your phone, click on the “Pages” link and then click on “Reading Challenge Bingo.” If you are on a computer, click on “Reading Challenge Bingo” (located on the left column). Do your best to check off five challenges in any direction. You may wish to continue after this week and try to complete all of the challenges.
• Click on the link below (#9) and watch/listen to the read aloud. Follow the directions/demonstration at the end of the video to make your own scroll. You will need paper, scissors, a writing utensil and either glue or tape.
• Writing Challenge Bingo! Click on the link below (#10). Do your best to check off five challenges in any direction. You may wish to continue after this week and try to complete all of the challenges.
• Click on the link below (#11) and watch/listen to the read aloud. Pick and draw your favorite animal. Try to write a sentence about the animal.
• Click on the link below (#12) and watch/listen to the read aloud. The author pretended she was a spider and wrote a diary. Pretend that you are a different insect or animal and write a diary entry.

Here are some questions you can think about before you write your entry.

-What is important to your animal?

-Where does your animal live?

-What does your animal eat?

-Who does your animal spend time with?

-What kind of dangers exist for your animal?

-How would your animal spend its day?

• Click on the link below (#13) and watch/listen to the read alouds. Write your own story and use speech bubbles. You could even color in your speech bubbles to match the colors of your characters just like Mo Willems does.
• Click on the link below (#14) and watch/listen to the read aloud. Try to think of one word that ends with each letter in the alphabet and write them down (zebra, crab, magic, bead...).

Reading Specialist Website- This site is full of read alouds, reading strategy lessons and videos. You will also find access to free downloadable books (leveled readers). Ask your child's teachers about your child's reading level to find the appropriate leveled readers.
