Students should be practicing addition and subtraction facts with flashcards to create fluency. These can be done by starting at the 1’s and moving on to 10’s. (1+0=1, 1+1=2, 1+2=3, 1+3=4 stop at +10 and continue for all numbers)
Using a deck of cards: each flip over a card and either add or subtract them, play WAR and discuss greater than, less than or equal to, each flips over 2 cards to create a tens number and compare them, discuss how many tens and ones are in each number.
· Using dice: create or use a 120 chart and race to 120. Roll 2 dice, add the numbers and move that many spaces and continue to see who reaches 120 first. Roll 2 dice and add or subtract the numbers, roll 2 dice and create a tens number and draw it out with tens sticks and ones circles.
