The Virginia English Standards of Learning (SOL) define the knowledge and skills students are expected to demonstrate at each grade level.  Virginia public school students complete standardized SOL assessments to measure their understanding of these standards. Schools are evaluated annually using student performance on these assessments.  High school students typically complete the End-of-Course Reading and Writing SOL assessments to earn verified credits required for graduation.   Additional information, including resources for the Integrated Reading and Writing Assessment, is available on the Virginia Department of Education website.

Grades 2-8

CIP Benchmarks are administered at the end of Quarters 1–3 to assess the skills and standards taught during each quarter.  The assessments are aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning and provide teachers and school teams with information about student strengths and areas for continued growth.  Results may be used to guide instructional planning, intervention, and review.

Grades K-8

The Virginia Language and Literacy Screening System (VALLSS) was developed by Virginia Literacy Partnerships at the University of Virginia. VALLSS is used to screen students’ literacy skills and identify those who may need additional support in areas such as decoding, fluency, and comprehension.  Results help educators determine students’ instructional needs and plan appropriate support.  Additional information is available on the 2026-2027 VALLSS Information Sheet and the Virginia Literacy Partnerships website.
