All students will take English, Math, Science, History and Health and Physical Education in 8th Grade. Students may choose 4 electives.
The middle school approach provides a team of teachers to support students academically, socially, and emotionally. In 8th grade, students solidify their understanding of middle school skills as they prepare for high school.
In Math 8, students develop a deeper understanding of the concepts needed for success in high school, such as algebra, geometry, and statistics. Students pursuing high school credit in Algebra I will use algebra as a tool for representing and solving a variety of practical problems.
Civics and Economics teaches students to examine the roles citizens play in the political, governmental, and economic systems in the United States and examine the foundational documents and principles with which the constitutions of Virginia and the United States were established.
In Physical Science, students learn about the nature and structure of matter and the characteristics of energy, including the particle nature of matter, the periodic table, physical and chemical changes, energy transfer and transformations, properties of longitudinal and transverse waves, electricity and magnetism; and work, force, and motion.
English class develops strong reading, writing, communicating, and research skills at higher levels with an increased emphasis on nonfiction, authors' qualifications, point-of-view, style, and writing composition and mechanics.
In Physical Education, students engage in complex, skillful movement, in addition to developing an understanding of how the body systems interact with and respond to physical activity.
To develop their individual interests, students have the opportunity to choose electives in visual art, theater, music, computer technology, agriscience, family and consumer science, and world languages.
