All students will take English, Math, Science, History and Health and Physical Education in 6th Grade. Students may choose 4 electives.
The middle school approach provides a team of teachers to support students academically, socially, and emotionally. Students in 6th grade transition from learning foundational skills in elementary school to more abstract and disciplinary skills in middle school.
In Math 6, students develop an understanding of rational numbers, determine area and perimeter, solve linear equations, and use concrete materials to facilitate problem solving.
History class explores events from before Columbus's landing in America until the end of the Civil War in 1865, and students develop the intellectual skills required for responsible citizenship.
In Science, students explore the characteristics of their world, from the Earth’s placement in the solar system to the interactions of water, energy, air, and ecosystems on the Earth, and they apply their scientific knowledge to solve problems.
English class develops strong reading, writing, communicating, and research skills at higher levels, with an increased emphasis on narratives and nonfiction.
In Physical Education, students engage in cooperative and competitive small-group games and/or outdoor pursuits, fitness activities, dance and rhythmic activities, and sports, as well as learn about nutrition, balance, and heart rate.
With more student-selected courses offered in middle school, students have the opportunity to choose electives in visual art, theater, music, computer technology, agriscience, family and consumer science, and world languages to develop their individual interests.
