Students in English 6 learn to further their skills in communication and multimodal literacies, reading, writing, and research. They develop their communication skills by working respectfully with diverse teams, delivering multimodal presentations, and interpreting information from media. In their reading, students study word origins and vocabulary, compare fiction and nonfiction, analyze narrative structure, create summaries, and draw inferences. They also plan, draft, revise, and edit writing with an emphasis on narrative and reflective writing. Sixth grade introduces writing thesis statements, and students write multiparagraph compositions. In addition, students use researching skills to find, evaluate, and select appropriate resources for a research product. They evaluate the validity and authenticity of texts, cite sources, and follow guidelines for gathering and using information.
