Students in English 8 develop communication, reading, writing, and research skills in increasingly complex contexts. Students evaluate and produce media and create multimodal presentations featuring different points-of-view. In reading, they study word origins, roots, connotations, and denotations. Students also compare fiction and nonfiction, explain the development of themes, compare/contrast styles, and analyze points of view. Students plan, draft, revise, and edit writing with an emphasis on expository and persuasive writing and use claims, evidence, and counterclaims to support a position. Students also apply research techniques to analyze information by identifying misconceptions and possible bias. They evaluate the validity and credibility of sources, apply research techniques to quote and paraphrase, cite sources using MLA or APA style, and follow guidelines for gathering and using information.
