This course is designed for secondary school students to develop real-life, outcome-driven approach skills for digital citizenship, basic computer operations, keyboarding, application software (word processing, spreadsheets, multimedia applications, databases), and career exploration. This course promotes skills that can be applied across the curriculum and offers preparation relevant to 21st century skills and postsecondary education. Students who successfully complete this course may be eligible for a rigorous and relevant industry certification examination. Student skills may be enhanced by participation in work-based learning activities and/or the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). Note: This course may be offered to middle school students for high school credit if approved by the local school division. The industry certification does not apply to middle school. The GATE resource class is an elective for students identified as eligible for gifted services. This course is designed to provide enrichment beyond the regular core curriculum for students identified for gifted services. Students will work towards improving their skills in problem finding and problem solving; critical and creative thinking; independent research in their area(s) of interest beyond the core curriculum. Inquiry and investigation will be used as students address both hypothetical and relevant, real-world problems. Students will also be expected to work independently to enhance their skills towards becoming self-directed and independent learners. In addition, students will also work collaboratively in groups to improve their skills in being productive members of a team. The learning outcomes will be structured around collaboration, critical thinking, citizenship, communication, and community.
