What is Placemaking?

All TAP internships/projects have a place or placemaking focus. By placemaking we very broadly mean a process of planning, designing, reinventing, nurturing and enriching public and private indoor and outdoor spaces that prioritises the relationship between people and places

However, we know that 'place' means many different things to many different people - and different things to different organisations/businesses - and the TAP programme facilitates an ongoing conversation with students and partners about the applied and theoretical meanings of 'place' and 'placemaking'. Generally, past TAP projects have involved activity that improves the relationship between (specific) people and (specific) places via a tangible outcome.

TAP students on the programme are encouraged to explore the following questions, during their preparatory workshops and with the hosts of their internships/projects:

When does a space become a place? Why do we feel connected to or disconnected from a place? Who is involved in making places? What motivates them and informs their work? How can the arts, humanities and social sciences contribute to improving and reimagining how places are made to benefit communities?

Below is a link to our TAP blog, where you can find a selection of blog posts from our students, many of which explore the meanings of place through their experiences with their host organisations. Our first blog post, which offers some introductory reflections on the different meanings of' placemaking' is a good place to start if you're new to the term.
