Hi and welcome to the 3rd year of your studies. I’m Jenny Prisutova, the 3rd Year Tutor for Mechanical Engineering. My role is making sure your academic experience runs smoothly by working with student reps and module leaders, as well as picking up general problems, and talking to students who are struggling.
This year you will be able to select optional modules starting from Spring Semester. You can look through module introductions by following this link, and selecting see Modules > Optional Module Information - level 3, which will help you to make an informed choice. Those of you on a BEng course will carry out your final year project this year, so please look out for and attend any information sessions related to it.
If you have any difficulties with any of your modules, please talk to your module leaders and/or student reps in the first instance. However, if the problem is more complex, or of a more general nature, then please see or email me. Please remember that if something is not going well, or you are struggling, we are here to help, so please get in touch if you need support. I hope you have a successful 3rd year.

Postgraduate Study - Taught - Our MSc courses are for students who want to study advanced mechanical or manufacturing engineering, and go on to address engineering challenges facing both industry and society.
Year 3 Tutorial Groups - You can find your tutorial group using the spreadsheet linked here.
BEng awarded if:
You have achieved a pass mark (above 39.5) in MEC315 Individual Project.
AND
You have achieved 240 credits at Levels 2 & 3 combined.
OR
Achieve at least 200 credits, at least 90 of which come from Level 3.
OR (to be awarded a Pass degree without Honours)
Achieve 180 credits in Levels 2 & 3 with permission of external examiners.
Level 3 students registered on a MEng degree programme must pass no less than 100 credits out of 120 credits in order to proceed to level 4. Students may be allowed to progress with failed modules, for which they will be "compensated" and will still receive credits for. In order to progress in this manner students must achieve a mark of no less than 30 in any modules for which they are "compensated".
You must also have achieved a weighted mean grade of greater than or equal to 49.5, and have no fails in any of your 'must pass' modules. Please be aware that at level 4, the pass mark for undergraduate students increases to 50.
Progression with compensated credits is at the discretion of the exam board. It is not standard practice to allow students to progress with compensated credits until they have exhausted their resit opportunity.
If you have not satisfied the above requirements then you may be permitted by the Faculty to be awarded a BEng degree, but will be ineligible for the award of that Degree with Honours.
Level 3 advice on re-assessment:
BEng final year students are only permitted to resit modules in either of the following situations:
The student has met the University of Sheffield requirements for a degree award as outlined in the General Regulations for First Degrees, but has failed to meet the Engineering Council requirements. In this case students are permitted one resit opportunity (usual in the August resit period) for any modules for which they have been awarded credit in compensation for a failure.
The student has not met the University of Sheffield requirements for a degree award as outlined in the General Regulations for First Degrees but would like to be considered for an unaccredited, BEng pass degree, without Honours. In this case students are permitted to resit any failed modules either during the August resit period, or as a repeat student during the following academic year.
Level 3 MEng students will be given a maximum of one resit attempt to pass your remaining modules. This will take place in the August re-assessment period in most cases. All students should remain available during the August re-assessment period in case they are required to re-sit modules in order to proceed. Students must notify the department in advance of the August re-assessment period if they are not planning to attend these exams or these will be counted as your final attempts at the modules. Any students carrying fails should make use of their resit attempt, to ensure they do not reach the Engineering Council "cap" of 30 credits of compensated module. Level 3 results will also be counted in your overall degree award calculation.
All resits will be capped at a bare pass mark of 40, unless your original result was Not Assessed (NA).
