Within the first few weeks of arriving at the University, undergraduate/postgraduate students are allocated a Personal Tutor and will retain this Tutor for the duration of their studies. These are allocated by the Student Support office with support from the Year 1 tutor, Dr Rachel Tomlinson. During the first weeks of the start of the academic year, groups may change, due to non/late arrival of students. It is hoped that tutors and students will get to know each other well. The role of the Personal Tutor is to provide pastoral support and academic guidance, appropriate to a student's stage in academic progression. A Personal Tutor will offer personal support and act as a gateway to a wide range of services and enable students to think 'beyond the course'. It is envisaged that students will retain the same Personal Tutor for the duration of the course, but changes do occur due to unforeseen circumstances. Students on the taught postgraduate courses are also allocated a Personal Tutor and 4-5 tutorials are timetabled each semester. Guidance on how to access a tutees calendar is attached below.
Undergraduate: Students should initially see their Personal Tutor during Intro Week. First Year students will then have 2 sessions per week, in a small group (4-5) , with their Tutor during the year which are usually held in the tutor's office. In year 2, personal tutorials are held less frequently but usually 3 meetings are timetabled for each semester. In year 3, personal tutorials will be held twice in a semester. However, personal tutors should be available for their students to discuss any issues they may experience.
Postgraduate: Personal tutorials are held approximately 4-5 times a semester. However, personal tutors should be available for their students to discuss any issues they may experience.
As well as these formal meetings, all students should also have access, at reasonable notice, to their Personal Tutor. If a Personal Tutor is absent, students are advised to see either their Year Tutor, Director of Student Experience, MSc Tutor and the Learning & Teaching Manager.
