Engaging families in making

This part of the project is centred around a series of family events.

Your school will receive an event pack and 30 home kits to give away.

This can be different children to the ones involved in the class project.

Co-host an afternoon event for families in April/May with a member of Maker{Futures}

  • 10 families

  • Afternoon or after school

  • Maker inspired story

  • Playful making with cardboard

  • Show & tell

  • Family take home kit and feed back on their projects (feedback can be done through school's usual routes e.g. google classroom / Teams etc)

  • School runs further events using the remaining kits

Suggested timetable for a 1.5 hr session

  • Welcome, a drink and get settled (10 min )

  • Storytime (10 mins)

  • Making time (45 mins)

  • Tidy up (10 mins)

  • Show & tell (10 mins)

  • Goodbye (5 mins)

Next steps for schools

  • Book your family event with Kat Greenacre for April and May (k.greenacre@sheffield.ac.uk)

  • Start collecting cardboard

  • Choose/invite 10 families to participate (Y1-Y6 and can be different to those children already involved)

  • Arrange for photo permissions for families involved in the event

  • Decide on a way for families to feedback photos of their home making projects (Teams, Google Classroom, Seesaw etc)

A member of the Maker{Futures} team will be on hand to help with the event, but we suggest that teachers or pastural support staff take a leading role by welcoming families and reading the story.
