Updates!

We are delighted to invite you to participate in the Yorkshire Consortium for Equity in Doctoral Education’s (YCEDE) Circle Mentoring programme for PGRs! This is being held online, Monday 3rd February 14:00-16:00.
- Mentors:

Dr Daniel Okeowo is a Lecturer in Pharmacy Practice at the School of Pharmacy, Newcastle University. He earned his Master’s degree in Pharmacy from the University of Durham and Newcastle University in 2018, completing a dissertation titled "Clinical Practice Guidelines for Older Patients with Multi-morbidities – What Are the Implications for Deprescribing." Following his pre-registration year at University College London Hospitals, Daniel became a registered pharmacist in August 2019. He went on to pursue a PhD at the University of Leeds, funded by the NIHR Yorkshire and Humber Patient Safety and Translation Research Centre, focusing on "How to Safely and Routinely Implement Deprescribing in Primary Care." Following this, Daniel took up a lectureship role at Newcastle University’s School of Pharmacy
Donald Palmer has a BSc in Medical Sciences from Bradford University, MSc in Immunology at KCL and a PhD from MRC, Clinical Sciences Centre. Donald worked in laboratories at Cancer Research and Imperial College London; in the latter he successfully obtained an MRC Career Development Award. He joined the Royal Veterinary College, University of London in 2002 and is currently an Associate Professor of Immunology.

PhD Outreach Event at the Diamond at the request of some academics (we're expanding!!): 13.00-15.00, 12th Dec 2024, Workroom 3, there will be free pastry and coffee in exchange for chatting to students. If you'd like to come please email Andi (address at the bottom)
The University has received funding from The Wellcome Trust to host 5 undergraduate students as part of the Biomedical Vacation Scholarships Scheme. Deadline: 24th January 2025 (12 noon). Apply here. More info here.

Volunteering and Outreach Opportunities for PGR Students

Volunteering and outreach are fantastic ways to give back to the community and connect with new people, both within the PGR network and the wider Sheffield community. Whether you’re looking for one-off events or long-term commitments, there are plenty of ways to get involved. We are here to help answer any questions you might have, feel free to reach out via email or come chat with us at the weekly Wellbeing Coffee (you’ll usually find one of us there!). We’re also eager to hear your ideas about volunteering and outreach, so even if you're not sure where to start, we’re here to help!

Planned activities include:

Blood donation drives
School outreach programs
Yoga sessions
Charity runs (with training plans for all fitness levels)

We’re also partnering with the Student Union to expand our reach and offer more opportunities to volunteer with diverse charities. If there’s a specific charity or cause you’re passionate about, let us know! We’d love to help organise an event for it.

Keep an eye on the PGR calendar for upcoming events, and don’t hesitate to get involved. Together, we can make a meaningful impact!
