• Pub HD

Pub HD is a regular informal event where postgraduate students can present their research in a relaxed setting. It’s a great opportunity to share your work, meet fellow researchers, and enjoy some social time.

• PhD life raft

The PhD Life Raft is a supportive online community set up by Dr Emma Brodzinski, designed to help PhD students navigate the challenges of their doctoral journey. This is not affiliated with the Univerity of Sheffield, but many students have found it a helpful community. Offering practical advice, resources, and a network of peers, the PhD Life Raft focuses on tackling issues such as time management, overcoming academic obstacles, and maintaining mental well-being throughout the research process. By joining this community, students can find encouragement, share experiences, and access valuable tools to stay on track and successfully complete their PhD.

• Researcher-led networks

There are three researcher-led networks open to postgraduate researchers that are a way to connect with other researchers and share experiences, strategies, and resources. They offer peer-led spaces that host community-building events and workshops and provide valuable opportunities to learn, collaborate, and support one another.

• Languages for All
  Languages for All is a university-wide scheme for all University of Sheffield students and members of the public wishing to develop foreign language skills. This could be learning a new language from scratch, or continuing to build on a language started at school or college. There are 17 languages to choose from that you can learn, **for free** as part of your Doctoral Development Programme or as an extracurricular activity through self-funding.

• Postgraduate Researcher Experience Programme (PREP)
  The uni of Sheffield PREP scheme enables you to engage with activities that enhance your career development. It supports you to undertake an internship, work-shadowing experience, explore career ideas and develop additional skills and attributes. You can apply for an award of approximately £1100 which could pay for accommodation, travel, salary costs or fees so that you can create your own work based learning experience. It is open to all PGRs regardless of career plans. However, we want to encourage knowledge exchange and partnership building beyond academia.

Applications open on a rolling basis, and there is not always guarantee it will run year on year, but keep an eye on your emails or check the site below.

A student chapter is a local or campus-based group affiliated with a larger professional organisation or association. Chapters provide students with opportunities for networking, skill-building, and leadership development, helping them connect with industry professionals and resources in their chosen field. Joining a chapter can enhance their academic experience and support their career growth.

• ISPE Student Chapter (Pharmaceutical engineering)
  The International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering is a non-profit association committed to the advancement of the educational and technical efficiency of its members through forums for the exchange of ideas and practical experience. A new student chapter of the ISPE is about to be started at the University of Sheffield!
  
  

• SIAM-IMA Student Chapter (Applied/Applicable/Industrial Mathematics)

There are two Sheffield Student Chapters relating to Mathematical research - the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA). This is a student-run chapter on all things applied/applicable/industrial mathematics
