Programme Regulations

Please use our programme regulations finder tool to view the structure of the programme of study, including the core units and approved modules you can take. It is important to review this information prior to selecting your modules.

> Enter AAPT112 in the search field and select 23-24 in the second drop down menu, then press 'search'. Please note that these regulations apply to both the full-time and part-time programmes.

Module Choice

Selecting the non-core modules you wish to study is part of the pre-registration process and you will be able to do this via the online module choice (OMC) system from 1 September 2023.  We have prepared some guidance.

Introductory Reading

If you would like to do some reading to prepare for the course we recommend you select from the following texts:

M Brickley and J McKinley (2004) Standards for the recording of human remains from archaeological sites. IFA. Available online at www.babao.org.uk/HumanremainsFINAL.pdf

PD Mitchell & M Brickely (2017) Updated guidelines to the standards for the recording of human remains. http://www.babao.org.uk/publications/ethics-and-standards/

TD White & PA Folkens (2005) The human bone manual. London: Elsevier.

JH Schwartz (2007) Skeleton keys. Oxford: Oxford University Press.

WM Bass (1995) Human osteology: a laboratory and field manual. Missouri Archaeological Society.

J Buikstra and D Ubelaker (1994) Standards for data collection from human skeletal remains. Fayetteville, Arkansas, Archaeological Survey Research Series No. 44.

M Schaefer, S Black, L Scheuer, A Christie (2009) Juvenile osteology. A laboratory and field manual. London: Academic Press.

Parker Pearson, M. (1999) The Archaeology of Death and Burial. Stroud: Sutton.

L Nilsson-Stutz & S Tarlow (2013). The Oxford Handbook of the Archaeology of Death and Burial. Oxford University Press.

Much more detailed and comprehensive reading lists will be made available for each module after you register.

We don't require you to purchase specific textbooks  - we have e-book copies of main texts, online access to journals and the library is well stocked with everything you need!

For the anatomy module, each of you will also need to have a lab coat—a standard long-sleeved white coat. These can be purchased reasonably cheaply online, or can be bought at the Students' Union once you get to Sheffield. If you are purchasing a lab coat from the Students' Union, it will be ordered for you and there may be a delay of a few days for it to arrive. If you are unsure of your size, you can order lab coats in multiple sizes through the Students' Union and you can try them on in-store once they arrive. Typically, the Students' Union does not charge you for the coat that is the wrong size, as they keep it and sell it on.
