Available AP Social Studies Classes
Typical Progression for Students
While the following is a typical progression, nothing is mandatory or "normal". One of the best aspects of AP classes is that students have the freedom to pick the subjects they are strongest in to take advantage of their skills and talent. Following this progression is just for planning purposes and should be discussed further as a family and with guidance support.
9th Grade
*AP World History
Satisfies the required World History graduation credit.AP Human Geography
Taken as a Social Studies Elective credit.
10th Grade
*AP US History
Satisfies the required American History graduation credit.AP Human Geography
Taken as a Social Studies Elective credit.AP Psychology
Taken as a Social Studies Elective credit.
11th Grade
*^AP US Government and Politics
Satisfies the required US Government graduation credit.
Taken as a full year at VHS.AP Human Geography
Taken as a Social Studies Elective credit.AP Psychology
Taken as a Social Studies Elective credit.AP European History (Brand New in 2025)
Taken as a Social Studies Elective credit.
AP World and/or AP US History pre-req is highly recommended.
12th Grade
*^AP Macro/Microeconomics
Satisfies the required Economics graduation credit.
Taken as a full year at VHS (1 semester of Macro, 1 semester of Micro).AP Human Geography
Taken as a Social Studies Elective credit.AP Psychology
Taken as a Social Studies Elective credit.AP European History (Brand New in 2025)
Taken as a Social Studies Elective credit.
AP World and/or AP US History pre-req is highly recommended.
*Required for graduation. Highly recommended in listed grade level but can be taken any year.
^Some students choose to take both AP Government and AP Macro/Microeconomics in their Junior year. Others choose to take one of the courses Junior year and the other Senior year as they are full year courses at VHS, utilizing two available class periods. It is suggested that students take AP Government directly after AP US History as some of the content will relate.
