Perks to Joining our Asher Family
Asher PRIDE
Anyone who has driven by our building knows that we have PRIDE, but what you may not know is that PRIDE stands for our 5 core beliefs- Personal Responsibility, Respect, Integrity, Determination, and Empathy. Students who exhibit any one of these 5 characteristics are awarded a blue PRIDE ticket, and once a month we have a PRIDE ceremony where we draw ten PRIDE tickets, and the winners receive PRIDE Mart money. We also name our Student of the Month at each PRIDE ceremony. Thank you, Ms. Lackey for keeping this tradition alive. And a huge thank you to Ms. Zanetti for bringing this beautiful PRIDE program to Asher.
Asher's Student Council
Asher’s Student Council is perhaps our most active organization. They are led by the incomparable Tonya Lackey, and they are responsible for our PRIDE ceremonies, our Honors Night, our Prom, all of our fundraising, and so much more. Student Council is also responsible for our PRIDE Mart; this is our student run store, open two days a week, during lunch.
PRIDE Mart
Our PRIDE Mart is our student-run school store, located in Room 4, open 2 days a week, during lunch, from 11:30-12pm. PRIDE Mart has every snack and drink you could possibly want, plus extra treats each month. It’s certainly the most seasonal, spirited room in the building, as well as a favorite amongst students. This store that we are all so proud of would not be possible without Tonya Lackey, wearer of many hats here at Asher.
Asher's MAEO Stars
At one time, Asher was considered a “powerhouse” in the MAEO organization. We intend to bring that title back. MAEO, or the Michigan Alternative Education Association, has their “Stars Program,” and we have five students participating in that program- (include student names and pictures). This year, our “Stars” are focusing on “The Panther’s Den”- our clothing/home goods store, where everything is absolutely free! (Accepting all donations, anytime.) Our MAEO team is led by Tonya Lackey and assisted by Rob Barrett, who is also a MAEO Board Member.
The Panther's Den
Keturah Godfrey first conceived of “The Panther’s Den.” She wanted to create a space in our district for people to drop off donations and also a space for people to pick up items donated. Asher quickly volunteered, as we are the perfect place, with community members from all over Downriver coming to our building for alternative, adult, and community education classes.
Tonya Lackey and her Student Council quickly took over this endeavor, continuing the collections, setting up an official store, and coming up with a catchy name. The Panther’s Den will officially debut in 2024, but Asher has always celebrated the spirit of giving, with yearly drives for coats, clothing, and other necessities.
If you are in need, of clothing, toiletries, or home goods, please let us know, and you can come “shop” (for free!) in our Den!
Prom
For both our in person and our virtual students, we offer the most beautiful prom, at the PRCU Banquet Hall, in Wyandotte, on May 11th, 2024. Tickets are required and will be available for purchase soon. More details to follow!
