ITEMS TO REVIEW & OVERVIEW STATUSES
JOB AID
Income Verification (VOI) is available for select properties only.
JOB AID
This job aid provides information regarding the various notifications and statuses that appear under the Items to Review and Overview sections.
Aside from a successful validation by paystub upload or connecting bank accounts, there are a number of statuses that can help indicate an applicant’s results from the VOI service. These statuses can be found in the Items to Review section, Overview tab, and Income Verification tab.
For applicants who bypass VOI by choosing the third option, "I am not contributing income to this application," the status will show as “Income Verification Completed” in the Items to Review section, "Complete" in the Overview tab, and “Income verified” in the Income Verification tab.
NOTE: For Dollar Validation service for insufficient income, the file will enter a pending status if the Rent/Income ratio causes a Reject or Guarantor Required response, and the Income Verification tab will read, "Rent/Income Ratio Does Not Meet Requirements."
There are four status messages when an applicant file or group scoring is pending:
PENDING - CONSUMER DISPUTE
PENDING - PROPERTY ACTION
PENDING - INCOME VERIFICATION
PENDING - SEARCH IN PROGRESS
These messages are to simplify and clarify pending statuses, making it easier to understand when property action is needed versus when a screening is pending for another reason.

Sometimes, when an applicant completes the paystub upload option through the VOI service, they upload a non-paystub document, such as an offer letter, compensation plan, or multiple-paystub attachment.
Though *Ocrolus cannot parse or provide information on non-paystub uploads, the attachment is still accepted by the system and displayed as a downloadable PDF under the Income Verification tab so that the leasing team has an opportunity to manually review the information on the attachment.
In these cases, the Items to Review will reflect, “Income Verification Pending” and the Income Verification tab will display the message, “Unable to calculate projected income.” The file will be in pending status until the VOI Validation Workflow is completed.
NOTE: With multiple-paystub uploads, though the system cannot calculate a projected income, the paystub details from all paystubs will be parsed and displayed in the VOI Report section.
*Ocrolus is a service that captures and extracts information from financial documents.
There are a variety of consistency checks between *Ocrolus and ScreeningWorks PRO with the intent to flag paystub documents that may be suspicious. Ocrolus is able to recognize incomplete data, missing pages, invalid information, and other inconsistencies, while the ScreeningWorks PRO applicant file contains four additional logic checks.
If any of the consistency checks fail, the Items to Review section will read, “Income Verification Pending,” and the Income Verification tab will read “Paystub could not be authenticated.” The file will remain in pending status until the VOI Validation Workflow is completed.
NOTE: If there is a problem calculating the gross total earnings due to a missing value, the Item to Review section will read, “Unable to Calculate Projected Income.” Additional consistency checks may appear under certain circumstances, such as a missing Employee Name, Employer Name, or Pay date.
*Ocrolus is a service that captures and extracts information from financial documents.
If an applicant uploads a paystub that is over 30 days old, it will be considered outdated.
For applicants who upload an outdated paystub, the Items to Review section will display the messaging, “Income verification pending,” and the Income Verification tab will display the message, “Paystub is older than 30 days.” The file will be in "Pending" status until the VOI Validation Workflow is completed.
Signals such as detecting if a PDF was converted into an image, additional signs of document tampering, and ability to tell if a document is an original PDF are added as additional layers to identify fraud.
Additional fraud signals for non-PDF uploads will improve fraud detection for ".jpg" or ".png" uploads. A alert flags will appear for pdfs that were not downloaded directly from the applicant’s financial institution, or if the document was converted to a pdf.
The signals will funnel into the existing fraud messaging such as irregularities detected in paystub. The signals will show in the visual of the paystub that highlights what on the paystub was detected as fraud. (See image)
For example, if the paystub originated as a png and then was converted to pdf, there will be a fraud indicator for that.
Tip: As always, please exercise a critical eye when verifying income. While the VOI system is designed to assist, it remains essential that teams thoroughly calculate income and carefully review documents for every applicant.
If an applicant uploads a paystub that has been identified by the system as having been generated using a recognized online paystub generation tool, the Items to Review section will display the messaging, “Income Verification Pending,” and the Income Verification tab will display the message, “Document source could not be authenticated.” The file will be in "Pending" status until the VOI Validation Workflow is completed.
Name matching logic allows ScreeningWorks PRO to compare the inputted name to the name associated with a paystub or bank account by comparing the first and last name that were submitted with the screening request to the full name string returned by Ocrolus or Finicity.
When a name mismatch is found, the Items to Review section will read, “Income verification pending” and the Income Verification tab will read, “Name Validation Required.”
The file will be in "Pending" status until the VOI Validation Workflow is completed.
The link in the VOI invite emails expire after 72 hours. After an invitation has expired, the file will be updated with the messaging, “Income verification pending” in the Items to Review section, and the Income Verification tab will read, “Manual Income Verification Required.”
The file will be in "Pending" status until the VOI Validation Workflow is completed.
Applications that are submitted for a screening request without an email address will return a "Pending" status under the Items to Review section, “Income verification pending,” and under the Income Verification tab, it will specify that the “Email Failed.”
The "Pending" status will remain for the affected applicant file(s) until the VOI Validation Workflow is completed.
Applicants that have been identified as having been submitted with possible misinformation will display “Possible CPN/Synthetic Identity,” under the Items to Review section and the Overview tab.
Within the Identity tab, “Possible CPN/Synthetic Identity” will display as well.
The "Pending" status will remain for the affected applicant file(s) until the VOI Validation Workflow is completed.
This document outlines the definition of statuses that may be returned in the Validation Workflow.
