"Walk Away" By Robin Willey
Inspired by LeGuin's "The Ones Who Walk Away from The Omalas"
"Omelas" - Shaelin Henry
The flowery meadow and the blue sky show the happier tone in the beginning when the narrator is describing the city. The creepy tree and ominous house represent the dark tone of the story once it’s revealed that one child has to suffer in exchange for everyone’s happiness. I took inspiration from some of the descriptions of the Omelas, like the red roofs on their houses, the dark blue sky, the green, grassy meadows, and in front of the house the child’s flute that’s played before the festival starts,

Mixed Media. A dark forest background represents the tone of this dark story. In the middle I put 3 tree trunks, representing the 3 people who died - Dr. Hitz, Leora Duncan, and Mr. Wehling. I also put 3 flowers, these represent Mr. Wehlings triplet babies. Because the trees are cut down, there is a space where the sunlight can come in. This allows the flowers live.

This piece of art represents the message in The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas, that a group of people cannot live in complete happiness without someone being miserable. I immediately related this story to the myth of Atlas, only Atlas was being punished for leading a battle against the gods, but either way his misery ended up benefiting a large group of people by holding up the sky from the earth much like how the girl in the basement's misery kept everyone else from becoming unhappy.
"The Gray Man" by Sienna Mikkelsen
Inspired by Vonnegut's "2BR02B"
The old man represents the nihilistic truth of the story as well as the reality of what happens in order to have a child. I used rough edges, a somber expression and monochromatic color palette to further express the dark undertones of the story, while the baby itself shows the joy and positive energy that comes from new beginnings.
"2BR02B" by Mariah Whitworth
The digital art I created represents the whole story. The blue sky and fields show the world in the story because it is peaceful and beautiful since there is population control. The roses represent the two babies that would have to die and the one that was allowed to live. The cloud raining bullets represents the three people the father shot so that all of the babies could live. The paintbrush represents the 200 year old painter who also decided to die,. The purple robes are from the painter’s mural who were people that volunteered to die. The factories are the different places people went to when they decided to die.
