What to bring:

What will we do:

Band camp is designed to be our time to learn all of the music and movement fundamentals needed for our competitive marching band (Maverick Brigade) to be successful for this upcoming fall season and be prepared for our upcoming Home Varsity Football games.  This is also a great time for students to build friendships and connections prior to the start of the year and they'll get a chance to get familiar with the campus!  Classes/groups involved: symphonic band, wind ensemble, colorguard, percussion, instrumental music and others welcome.

Symphonic Band/Wind Ensemble/Instrumental Music/Percussion

These class titles make up the "Wind Ensemble" and "Marching Band (AKA Maverick brigade) at LCC.  The wind ensemble and maverick brigade are one in the same.  The "Band" classes group begins as marching band starting in August and transitions to the concert setting at the end of the competitive season in mid-November.   We begin out concert studies with our holiday concert where we learn holiday repertoire as well as put on an exciting and fun show for the community.  After the first semester ends the band will focus on music for the "festival season" and learn a variety of repertoire that both expands the students playing abilities and broadens their cultural understanding in relation to music through the history of the music and their composers.  The year will wrap up with a second big performance for the community in late May where we will be looking at music for the sake of entertaining a broader audience and creating a fun and enjoyable experience for all.

What is Marching Band?

(Maverick Brigade)

Marching bands are the premiere musical ensembles of public high schools.  The marching band is comprised of woodwinds, brass percussion and colorguard all working toward the same goal.  These are the groups that are out in the community representing their schools at football games and competitions in the fall.  The marching band is a competitive sport but through the lens of art.   The music director and coaches will spend time creating the "Field Show" that the students will perform prior to the start of the season.  The band will then spend countless hours perfecting aspects of their show at the smallest detail in the pursuit of excellence.   Excellence is achieved through each member's hard work and dedication through time spent on and off the field.

What's in it for the students?

Students in marching band will spend many hours together working towards the same goal and build connections that will last a lifetime.  The members will go on trips and have the opportunity to perform together dozens of times during the marching band season (August - November).  Not only will they be focusing on becoming better musicians but they will also learn how to do so while on the move.  The physical element of the marching band has evolved far past the "parade band" and is much more intuitive and artful as the visual element compliments the music.   Students who participate in the marching band will receive PE credit for the fall semester which will in turn give them more opportunities to take more classes other than PE.  Students will learn how to work in small and large group settings on creating art through their performance.  At times they will be dealt difficult situations within their performance and learn how to overcome these together.  All this this hard work and time spent perfecting their product pays off once the students get to perform their show for the first time in uniform.

What does my student need to buy/pay for/have?

There will be expenses throughout the school year for various items like uniforms and instrumental needs.   Below is a list of key purchases as well as expendables that students may be responsible for providing.

About the LCC Bands

LCC BAND

Formed in 1999, The La Costa Canyon High School Band was the only music class offered at LCC.  Over the years the band and music program has grown and the band program has won numerous awards as well as traveled around the world to places like Europe and Hawaii.  The La Costa Canyon High School Band is comprised of the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band and Instrumental Music classes as well as the Maverick Brigade (Marching Band).  This ensemble performs more than any other performance-based ensemble at LCC at a variety of events such as football games, public events, festivals, concerts and much more.  The class itself focuses on learning and mastering music fundamentals in relation to performance.

Maverick Brigade

LCC prides itself in having the only marching band in the district!  The award-winning Maverick Brigade has been a staple in the community surrounding LCC and is the most active performance music ensemble at the school.  They perform at all home football games, competitions as well as local parades.

Instrumental Music & Percussion Class Information

The Instrumental Music class is designed to be an introductory level music class for beginner wind instruments and percussion.  These students will be with the LCC band all along their musical journey.  They will get private and group instruction while also performing early in the year.   These students will be in the Maverick Brigade along with the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble class students.  There will be a quick learning period but the goal is to get students playing music!  There is always a time to learn music and some students miss the chance to join band in elementary and middle school.

LCC Drumline & Indoor Percussion (extension of band classes)

The LCC Drumline performs at all home football games during the fall semester.  The drumline is a key element of the Maverick Brigade (LCC Marching Band).  The drumline consists of three components: the snare drums, tenor drums and the bass drums.  Each section has a unique sound and responsibility.  The snare drum is a high-pitched drum that plays the most intricate music in the drumline.  The tenor drums (quads) have 4 or 5 drums that each have a different tone.  The bass drums are made up of four or five members that play on one drum but together make a variety of tones.

Indoor Percussion takes the marching band drumline and percussion section indoors during the winter and works on cultivating a music production through the in-depth study of percussion pedagogy and musical/visual performance.  The drumline consists of the marching snare drums, multi-tenor drums and multi-tonal bass drums and cymbal line.  The front ensemble consists of concert percussion like marimba, xylophone, auxiliary percussion and drum set, electric bass guitar and electric keyboard.  This group is open to all students at LCC and local district middle schools.

These members will experience many hours of instruction from our team and grow significantly as musicians through this experience.  They will also learn how to work as a team to create a fun and exhilarating show.
