Class Details

Classroom Materials

  • Every student is expected to come to class prepared to learn. Basic materials include pens and pencils, paper, and a school issued Chromebook with sufficient charge to maintain use throughout the class period. It is also recommended that each student keep a separate three-ring binder, or simply a section in a binder. It is a benefit to your learning to keep work and recipes that have been handed back.

  • *(Optional) Students may bring their own Tupperware if they want to take home leftover food.

Online Resources

Google Classroom

  • Google Classroom will be used for class communication as well as for turning in assignments. Students will be able to find and access all materials necessary for the course. This includes the daily agenda, classwork, homework, course materials, announcements, meeting links, and due dates. Students are expected to use Google Classroom as an essential classroom resource. Parents/Guardians are also welcome to be added to the Guardian View of Google Classroom.

Safety

  • Participation in the Culinary Arts program will involve the use of cooking equipment, tools, and foods in a kitchen environment. Accidents can occur in any kitchen, but with the proper safety and sanitation, most can be avoided.

  • Dress Code for Lab Days For the safety of the students and to provide a sanitary and safe environment, the following dress/grooming code standards will be enforced at all times. Students who do not follow these standards will not be allowed to participate.

    • Apron- Provide by school or student can bring their own

    • Shoes- Flat, close toed shoes with rubber sole to prevent injury to feet and slippage

    • Hair- Hair neat and clean, and long hair tied back

    • Jewelry- A plain ring (band type), waterproof watch, and small stud earrings are acceptable

NOTE: Zero Tolerance Policy

    • Every study will be expected to follow all classroom and safety rules without exception. As the instructor, I must maintain a safe learning environment and every student must be able to be trusted to follow the rules at all times. Students will be suspended immediately from the class for any unsafe behavior that presents a safety hazard to themselves or others. A parent, student and administrator conference will be scheduled to review the incident. Possible consequences for unsafe behavior can be immediate and permanent removal from the class, zero credits, and a letter grade of F.

Discipline Policy

  • Please review the policies in the Torrey Pines High School Discipline Policy.

  • Any misuse of classroom materials or equipment will result in a Referral/Class Suspension

Cell Phone & Technology

Personal Electronic Devices

  • Electronic devices such as cell phones are distracting in the classroom environment. Current data shows that these devices distract students from learning - even when they are turned off and kept in their bags. Students will be required to dock their devices in a caddy for the duration of each class period unless specified for educational purposes for this class. Please refrain from using smart watches during class for any other reason than as a time telling device. Only school assigned Chromebooks will be acceptable devices used in class.

Class Expectations

Be Respectful, Be Prepared, Be On Time

  1. Be on time to class.

  2. Carefully listen to and follow the directions of the teacher.

  3. Have necessary classroom materials available and ready during class sessions. This includes making sure your school assigned Chromebook is charged and working properly.

  4. Practice digital citizenship and respect others’ privacy and dignity.

  5. Always put your best effort into your work.

***I understand that students have things going on in their lives outside of school. If for any reason you are ever having a bad day or have something going on that is taking away from your focus please let me know.

Lab Groups

Because teamwork is very important during labs, every student is expected to be working during the lab. If you find yourself in a group that is keeping you from doing your best, please see me right away so we can solve the problem before your grade drops. Lab groups change frequently throughout the year.

Lab Contribution

The Culinary Arts class budget at Torrey Pines High School must provide groceries for all cooking labs, culinary tools, classroom supplies, and sanitation materials for the entire year.

Due to a limited budget, students have the option of bringing some food items from home. If there is ever a problem or concern about this, please notify me as soon as possible. Bringing food from home is only necessary when students choose a recipe that would require food that costs more than their class budget allows – it is NEVER required.
