The indigenous people were very cultured and down to earth kind of humans. They respected every part of their land and treated it as if it was a part of their own lives. The Indigenous women that were driven out of their land and bodies had no control, the European colonizers were very crucial and fierce to the women as well. The Europeans used many different ways to drive out the natives out of their own land, violence being the main tactic for them.
The European colonizers were very nasty and crucial people. According to Jess Whatcott, they did not hesitate to use physical force against the Indigenous people and even used sexual force against the women too (pg.19). This impacted many women that were a part of the indigenous tribes. In the Podcast, All My Relations & Indigenous Feminism, Wilbur and Keene talk about how representation matters with them due to what they had to experience. Wilbur explains how, “our safety of body is affected by the way we are perceived in our lives,”(minute 27). When Qwo-Li Driskill talks about how these people were stolen from their bodies she is referring to the women that were sexually assaulted by the European colonizers. They didn’t have a choice to give their bodies up, it was stolen from them.
The impact that Europeans had on the Indigenous people has affected them to this day. In the short video, “Beyond Recognition,” Corrina Gould talks about how their sacred land of buried ancestors are being colonized and constructed on. Corrina and her people do not stand for this and have protests where their land is being destroyed. These protests that happen let the indigenous people speak their voices and concerns with no violence or consequences. This is very important for them because they do not have much land left so they have to protect and take care of all that’s left of the Indigenous tribes.
The Indigenous women have evolved greatly from when they were driven out of their homes and bodies. Many of the women today that are natives fight for their land and representation. In the Podcast, “All My Relations,” Keene talks about how there’s a fight with Patriarchy and how only the Indigenous people really know what Patriarchy is. Colonialism is what brought Patriarchy to the Americas and also is what drove out the Indigenous people.
The act of Decolonization is very harsh and crucial. Decolonization is the act of removing everything from that certain colony. This is what happened to the California Indians at the time of their decolonization. Governor Peter H. Burnett passed a law stating that all California Indians must be exterminated until extinct with the act of war. This is what is referred to as genocide. Burnett drove all the Indians out of California or enslaved them, this is the act that has to be done for a colony to be decolonized.
