Week 2 Emerging Technologies
Hello all,
Welcome to our second week of Communicating with Technology.
Announcements:
Enrolling from waitlist: For those who were on any waitlist for summer, and received a note from your instructor, you will have to complete the enrollment by 7/15. After that, you will not be able to join the class.
Fall registration: Fall registration is ongoing. As I look at all of the classes, I can see that there are still many seats available. It might be helpful to enroll when you can, as we did see in the summer that classes do fill. I am attaching the fall schedule for brain fitness so you can see the options.
Help enrolling: Do you need in person help enrolling in the fall? Or do you have a friend that wants to get into our classes but are brand new to the system? In this case, we would recommend that you attend one of the in person sessions which will be held at all campuses on different days and times in July. Here is a link to the "Enroll Fest" options. These sessions will also feature:
Interactive opportunities for new and prospective students
Enrollment workshops
Tours of the campus
Engaging demonstrations and workshops to garner interest and promote the incredible programs available
Food, music, and opportunity drawings!
Emeritus student site: Don't forget that our student site has lots of information including the summer and fall schedule, registration tutorials, information on technology assistance, details of classes and some selected flyers and more. VIsit the site by going to: sdcestudent55.com
Single Sign in: This will only apply to Canvas at the moment. But on Monday, the sign in to Canvas will change. It will now require your student email (your name@student.sdccd.edu) and your portal password. These slides will explain this further. At some point in the near future, the portal will also change to this format.
Last week:
Last week, we looked at "How Do I". In this class, we discussed creating contact groups, tips on completing online forms, QR codes and how to create, and digital wallets. We didn't get to Email attachments, but there is information on our course website on that which you can view and practice. We did record the class, which can be found on our lesson page:
cwtsdce.org>Topics Summer 2024>Week 1 How Do I (or click here).
Optional: We do have a site on Canvas. I have opened the discussion board for a welcome thread as well as a thread which highlights different disinformation which has been spotted recently. With elections coming up, it is helpful to keep your eyes open for this. Feel free to post anything you find online about disinformation, or feel free to create a new topic to discuss.
This week:
This week, we look at Emerging Technologies for Aging. It begins with a look at a White House paper which provides an overview of how technology may evolve and how it can benefit the older adult. After this review, we will focus on four aspects of the report: Activities of daily living, remote monitoring, mobility and transportation and cognition. We will learn about some of the newer technologies (both available and in the works) in these categories. The lesson includes examples and videos, and our presentation will include some of these videos. This is a great discussion topic, and you are invited to add your own ideas and thoughts. In addition, we will introduce a tool called Padlet where you can input your thoughts (and can include images, videos and more). If you want to get a head start on this, you can go to the Padlet site and add your own technology that you use currently in the home. Here is a link to the Padlet site. The website provides a link to this, as well as a link to the handout and presentation.
