COVID-19 Science

for KIDS!

Let's take some time this week to learn the science behind COVID-19 so we can better understand how the virus works, why everything has changed so much, and what we can do to keep ourselves and our families healthy.

Here is a simple story for our youngest learners to help them understand why we have to stay home from school.

Check out this story illustrated by Axel Scheffler (whose drawing style you will recognize from The Gruffalo). Click on the picture below to read it, or listen to it here!

The Princess in Black also has some important information to share with you. Click on the little square in the top right corner of the picture to see the entire graphic novel.

Now, for the science! I LOVE the experiment below that shows how soap destroys the COVID-19 virus! Click on the picture to open the link.

Here is a more simple version of the experiment above, to show how soap washes away germs and viruses.

Find out how germs spread easily from one person to another and see how they spread in this fun but messy glitter experiment.

Grade K-1 Students: This simple Germ Detectives lesson helps us understand why washing hands is so important.

Draw these cute hand-washing friends and put the picture up by your sink to remind everyone in your home to wash their hands!

Try the game below to see why washing hands is the best way to keep germs and viruses from making us sick!

To wrap up this theme, here's a message from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for the children of Canada in these tough times.

(speech by PM Trudeau, stop-motion by Tyler Walsh, 05APR2020)

Check back soon for our next theme, where we will listen to the story of Ishi: Simple Tips from a Solid Friend (by Akiko Yabuki). Ishi has some great ideas to help us choose and share happiness in this time when things are not going as we expected.
