Service Description

PrivaSearch is an artificial intelligence (AI) bot that is able to read the long privacy policies. The AI puts the privacy policy legalese into plain language for teachers to understand whether or not to use the EdTech product at hand. PrivaSearch is a software extension that is added to the Chrome browser. Creating a Chrome extension was purposeful as almost 90 million students and educators around the world use G-Suite for Education (Wan, 2019); therefore, most educators will have access to this browser when searching an EdTech product's privacy policy. When opened on the EdTech's privacy policy page PrivaSearch sends the URL to PrivaSearch's server where its machine learning (ML) classification algorithms sort the data on that page into ten Educator Assessment questions specifically based on student protection (these questions can be seen in the differentiation part of this pitch). Once sorted the ML server then rates the answers to the questions based on the Education Assessment questions and returns the rating to the teacher.

PrivaSearch is based on the already established privacy enhancement technology extension, PrivacyCheck created by the University of Texas at Austin, Center for Identity . The images below scroll through an example of the steps PrivacyCheck goes through to parse the text of a fictional website's privacy policy into categories based on questions that its ML server looks for: what PrivacyCheck calls User Control questions and General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) questions.

Slide 1: The fictional website's privacy policy.

Slide 2: Running PrivacyCheck on the privacy policy page.

Slide 3: Percentage score based on the User Control questions (provided in the differentiation page of this pitch) and the GDPR questions (also provided in the differentiation page of this pitch)

As a freemium product PrivaSearch offers the above: the AI bot that reads privacy policies and puts it into plain language to help educators vet EdTech products of interest. However, PrivaSearch also offers a premium software product to districts. This product includes PrivaSearch's freemium software which helps drive the premium software into the market. PrivaSearch's premium software package aggregates the information that teachers gather from their use of PrivaSearch freemium and places it into a district-wide server that personalizes the searches of the teachers in that district. This allows for faster, more locally accurate gathering of information on EdTech product privacy policies. Further, as teachers run PrivaSearch on a privacy policy this information is sent to the district's IT department for them to vet the product as well. Again, this is intended to create more locally accurate vetting of the chosen EdTech products in that district.
