Have a look at your social media accounts. Ask yourself if your social media presence gives off a good impression to potential employers. Use the assignment at left to guide your scoring and reflection.
Has anyone ever read the Terms of Service for their online accounts? In most cases, people simply click "Accept" and get on with using the free software. Doing so is the same as signing a contract - you are legally bound by the terms of the agreement, and so is the company.
Companies know that you are unlikely to read these documents, but they also know that they can get away with some corporate behaviour that you may not have agreed to had you taken the time to read the document.
Read the Terms of Service (or End User Agreement) for one of your favourite Social Media companies. You may not need to read the entire document if its particularly long. Write a reflection to answer these questions: Does the company encourage or discourage customers to read these documents? What makes you think so? Is the language clear and easily understood by most? Were there any surprises in the Terms that made you wonder about or reconsider your decision to use the software? Do you think the majority of people understand the extent to which their information is accessed and used because of the Terms of Service? How comfortable are you using these softwares after reading the Terms of Service agreements?
Many of us are aware that our activity online is shaped by algorithms, but most of us aren't aware of the way in which algorithms shape our identity and thoughts. It is easy to deny this, but are we really in control of what we think when so many ideas come to us through automated suggestions and playlists?
Watch the Zeynep Tufeckci TED Talk "We're Building a Dystopia Just to get People to Click on Ads". What are the most surprising aspects of the video? How aware do you think people are, on average, of the ways in which their freedom of thought is impacted by algorithms? What are the possible benefits of algorithms? What harm might they cause? Has this video impacted the way you think about your online activity?
