As we continue to nurture a positive school environment, we want to highlight the incredible benefits of kindness. Teaching our children to be kind fosters empathy, improves relationships, and promotes a sense of community. Here are just a few of the many other benefits of practicing kindness:Â
Boosts Self-Esteem: Acts of kindness can boost your child's confidence and sense of self-worth.Â
Enhances Social Skills: Kindness helps children develop better relationships with peers and adults.Â
Creates a Positive Atmosphere: A culture of kindness contributes to a more supportive and friendly school environment.Â
Kindness is contagious!Â

As we move into a new calendar year, keeping good routines at home and at school is a great first step for helping our students feel successful at school. Building a love of reading in your child by reading aloud at home strengthens their language, vocabulary and comprehension skills, and improves their social skills and confidence as you listen to them read. The more chances your students have to interact with math topics they learn in class, the more opportunities they have to improve their math skills. Daily math review activities can provide the reinforcement needed for students to master basic math concepts so they can excel at more advanced work. We encourage families to go onto their student's Learning Management System (LMS) like Google Classroom to spark conversations at home or review topics covered in class. Teachers are continuing to assess, guide and educate our students and formal report cards will be coming out in March. Together, we can build up their confidence and knowledge. Below are some good strategies to support our learners. These can be adapted to younger students as well.Â
Parents, if you are wanting to chaperone, you will need a CRC done. Please see our website under parents - volunteer. This needs to be completed immediately.
Please sign your child on on MySchoolBucks to identify that they need rentals.

Pancakes at FES
Mr. Page, Mrs. Fayant and Mrs. Proulx make pancakes for our kiddos. Please see your classes time and date! We make sure we follow all allergies as we do have gluten and dairy free options on specific days.
Dates may change and if so, will be communicated by classroom teachers.
We’re excited to share that on February 6th, the Vancouver Canucks will be visiting FES for a jam-packed and unforgettable day of hockey fun! Members of the Canucks, including Fin, Rod Braithwaite, Kirk McLean, and others, will be spending the day learning and playing hockey alongside all of our classes. We’re also thrilled to have the BV Nitehawks joining us for this special event. Please have your FOIPPA forms signed as this event will be recorded.
To make the day even more exciting, every student will receive a ticket to the Nitehawks game on the 6th, which will be handed out during the week of the game. Let’s come together as a community and pack the rink to cheer on the Nitehawks!
The Canucks will also be attending the Nitehawks game that evening, so we encourage families to arrive early, as capacity may be reached.
It’s shaping up to be a fantastic day celebrating hockey, community, and school spirit—we can’t wait!
Please go to the school website under calendar or HERE to view our school calendar. We will continually update this as the year goes on.Â
Please watch the video for further explanation on different calendars and how to subscribe.Â
Family Groups: Throughout the rest of the school year, our Family Groups will be multi-aged groups where all staff will be supporting students and the goal is to bring a sense of multi-age community into our school. This year, our Family Groups have focused on drumming and learning a new song each time we meet. Ask your child to sing you a song they have learned this year. Â
Our theme for the month of February is celebrating diversity, empathy, kindness, and compassion. Our Family Group Activity will be on this theme and focus on the book "When We Are Kind".
Core Competencies at FES. This term we are focused on our personal and social goals at our school. For more specific information on the topic, visit the website here. We are reporting home on this core competency right before spring break (with report cards). A great conversation starter at home around the dinner table.
♥️ For families wanting to bring Valentine's Treats to school, please no homemade items. For those interested in bringing food/snacks, there needs to show the ingredients and a reminder that we are nut aware.
MathUP program we are using in intermediate. The vocabulary we are using is shared HERE for families to review, which is K - 8.
At KCSD, enhancing student learning means being intentional, reflective, and responsive to the needs of our learners. It is not just about setting goals—it is about living them every day in our classrooms, hallways, and conversations with students and families.
This year, our school has focused learning goals that guide our work and decision-making. We are actively measuring our progress through a variety of meaningful sources, including class observations, FSA results, formal learning updates, and Street Data—which involves listening to students, observing learning in real time, and sharing what we are seeing and hearing. These student voices, along with family input, are essential in helping us understand what is working well and where we can continue to grow.
Our key areas of focus this year are Indigenous student success, numeracy, and belonging. Each of these goals has been broken down into more specific components so that we can thoughtfully measure progress, reflect on growth, and identify areas for improvement. This allows us to move beyond broad intentions and toward purposeful action.
One important instructional shift this year has been the increased use of MathUP, particularly in our intermediate classes. This resource supports strong, consistent numeracy instruction and helps students develop deeper understanding and confidence in mathematics. Families are encouraged to reach out to their child’s teacher or visit Google Classroom for more detailed information about how MathUP is being used in your child’s learning.
Your voice matters. Hearing from students, families, and staff helps strengthen our learning community and ensures that our work remains focused on what truly supports student success. We are grateful for your continued partnership as we learn, reflect, and grow together.
Reading at Home
If you are looking for guidance on how to read with your child, there are various effective strategies that can be implemented to improve literacy skills. A useful resource to consider is a video created by FES, which provides tips and techniques for parents to promote reading with their children at home and at school. A recommended goal is to devote 20 minutes each day to reading with your child, which can have a positive impact on their learning and development. By following the strategies outlined in the video, families can strengthen their reading skills and encourage a lifelong love of learning. This was done by Mrs. Melenka and we thank her for her time.Â
Parking and Driving in the School Zone
We are experiencing an increase in student drop-offs in the morning and after school. Parents picking up/dropping off children are asked to do so:Â
1) At the back of the school at the bottom of the stairs
2) Across the street at the churchÂ
3) Across the footbridge by the manor.Â
Adhering to these guidelines will ensure all student safety. Also, please use extreme caution when pulling in or backing out.
In addition, for the safety of all our students, please do not pick up or drop off your children inside our school bus zone. We want all of our students to be safe. You can help us by reminding your friends and neighbours that the speed limit around the school is 30 km/h, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm on school days. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.Â
Students are also walking to curling, skating or to other community areas. To keep all our kids safe, please follow these guidelines. We encourage other FES families to help other families to be reminded of the expectations. We will be communicating with the village and police to increase proximity around these times.Â
Parents of children who turn 5 years old between January 1 and December 31, should plan to register their child for Kindergarten during Kindergarten registration week, January 26 - January 30, 2026.

Also, HERE is important information from Interior Health to consider when registering your child for Kindergarten.Â
