Expect

Expect

By Medha V.

What is it to expect?

To expect an apology

For the words that run through me like a blade

To expect sweet sugary words to turn to song

To listen to merrily

To expect to be consoled

When the world crumbles in your hands

As if being nothing more than glass and sand

People use the word so often it has droned on to deaf ears

Sang a symphony but was simply ignored

For going on with that symphony, that charade, they deserve a reward

“I expect for you to be perfect”

And expecting does not mean that something will come

My perfection gives you what satisfaction?

A 100 hastily scribbled on paper means nothing to the blind

That apology may never happen

They don’t care that it cut like a knife

They exercise their right of refusal

Those crisp golden words never turned to a song

Because they are simply too blind to see what it could be

They see words on a page, not a song that deserves to be sung for the world to hear

The consolation and light when all is dark

May never come

So you have to grow the light yourself and hope for the best

But I still expect

Why?

These expectations are part of humanity, a key in our deaf symphony

Because honestly?

What are our goals in life if we do not expect them?

But do not expect perfection

Expect growth

For to be perfect is to set no goals

And goals,

Are why we expect at all

So let us continue our deaf symphony

Then maybe one day,

We will play in harmony
