Lettuce is a plant belonging to the family of the Asteraceae. It is often called salad, being often part or main ingredient of the homonymous dish. The radical apparatus is composed of short taproot and superficial roots, thin and fleshy. The leaves are of various shapes, ovate or elongated, and green or reddish colour.
Lettuce loves quite cool temperatures and for this it is an ideal vegetable to grow in autumn and spring (March, April)

Being composed for about 95% of water, the lettuce has a very low energy content but, according to the varieties, it contains many vitamins, including vitamin C, vitamin A and vitamin K; some dark colored varieties contain high beta-carotene concentration. Lettuce can also be a good source of iron.
INGREDIENTS
4 cups torn romaine
1 medium red onion, thinly sliced, optional
1 large cucumber, halved and sliced
3 medium tomatoes, chopped
2 medium ripe avocados, sliced or cut into 1/2-in. chunks
1 each large green and sweet red pepper, chopped or sliced
1-1/2 cups mayonnaise
1/4 cup canned chopped green chiles
2 teaspoons chili powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1 cup crushed tortilla chips
1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
