EOC Testing Cancelled

Governor Abbott and TEA have cancelled all EOC/STAAR testing for the remainder of this school year including summer testing. Students taking a course for first time credit this year will have their testing requirements waived for those courses. See the document at the link below which explains this in more detail.

STAAR/EOC Cancellation

April is the Month of the Military Child

'Each year, April is set aside as a military child appreciation month, officially known as the Month of the Military Child. With its start in the mid-1980s, the Pentagon and other military support organizations and agencies use the month to recognize military kids for their sacrifice and bravery on the homefront.

The term "military brat" is a badge of pride worn by generations of kids who traveled the world with their parents, moving into adulthood with the knowledge that they have the strength to handle anything. Military children deal with separations, deployments, frequent moves and even their parents' injuries as part of the life they were born into or entered with their families.

Because purple is a color used to represent all military services, the theme "Purple Up" is used over the course of the month.

Their strength and resiliency is inspirational. Especially this year, as many of them are facing new learning from home adventures, extended separations from a parent and delayed PCSes.’

This article sums up nicely what this month is about and can be found here: Month of the Military Child

TEA has also provided guidance for Military families during this time which can be found here: TEA Guidance for Military Families

Child Abuse Prevention Blue Ribbon Week

April 6 - 10 is designated as Child Abuse Prevention Blue Ribbon Week. Please help us spread awareness of this important issue by taking part in the following days.

Free SAT/ACT Prep and Practice and Prep for AP Testing

As we adjust to this new normal together, Kaplan wants students to have the option to continue their test prep for free in a healthy, safe environment. Right now, they are offering a free month of SAT On Demand, which helps students master the exam in a little as 30 minutes a day. They also have free live lessons for the AP exams including World History, U.S. History, and Biology. There is also more in their full resource hub—including free ACT prep. Their hope is that it helps students feel a little less stressed during this uncertain time.

Great News! AP Testing Will Still Take Place This Year

The AP Program will invest heavily over the next month in the following ways:

• For the 2019-20 exam administration only, students can take a 45-minute online exam at home.

• Students will be able to take the exams on any device they have access to—computer, tablet, or smartphone. Taking a photo of handwritten work will also be an option.

• College Board recognizes that this could prevent some students from participating, and they are working with partners, so these students have the tools and connectivity they need. If your student needs mobile tools or connectivity, please send and email to: ACorbett@scuc.txed.net by Wednesday, April 22nd to let her know of your need.

Mental Health Minute

This week we want to focus on mental health by doing things to help others. Helping others gives us a sense of meaning and purpose which often helps us feel more positive about life. One study showed that individuals who did five random acts of kindness a week, saw an increase in their own happiness by 42%. Although this time of social distancing may affect the ways you are able to help, there are still many things you are able to do while you are at home. Below are some ideas of things you can do:

  • Write letters and deliver them to an area nursing home, or assisted living place, and to healthcare workers.
  • Deliver food to area healthcare, essential workers in other businesses that are remaining open to meet needs of the public, and those who work the night shifts for those jobs.

Below is an app made for iPhone and iPad which has a free game that gives support to the World Food Programme, Just by playing it helps fund this organization to help end hunger around the world. Check it out!

Free Rice (App only available on iPhone or iPad)

See the article to the right about additional ways you can help.
