Webelos Walkabout

Complete Requirements 1-4 and at least one other


#1  Plan a Hike

Plan a hike or outdoor activity.  Required

How to complete it:
Plan and suggested a 3-mile hike route for your den or family to take together.  

Tell us what we would need to do to prepare for this hike. 

What supplies do we bring? 

What is in our first aid kit?

What is in our backpack? 

Based on the weather and geography, what else should we bring?

Details: Hike Location, Hike Distance, Gathering place, Gathering time, Hike Start Time, Hike Finish Time, Water locations, Bathrooms, Where to eat or bring your meal?

Example - Burke Lake Trail 4.8 miles

#2 Make a Kit

Assemble a first aid kit suitable for your hike or activity.   Required

How to complete it:
Show us what you would include in your first aid kit in your 3-mile hike route for your den to take together.  

Tell us what you can treat specifically with what you are bringing. 

What emergencies might arise from your hike and what supplies do you need?

Example - See above pic 

  • Sunscreen - To treat/prevent sunburn

  • Hand sanitizer - Clean hands before help

#3 Recite the Code

Recite the Outdoor Code and the Leave No Trace Principles for Kids from memory. Talk about how you can demonstrate them on your Webelos adventures.  Required

  • Be Considerate of the outdoors, and

  • Be Conservation-minded.

Leave no Trace

1.       Plan Ahead & Prepare

2.       Travel & Camp on Durable Surfaces

3.       Dispose of Waste Properly

4.       Leave What you Find

5.       Minimize Campfire impacts

6.       Respect wildlife

7.       Be Considerate of Others


#4   Hike 3 miles

With your Webelos den or with a family member, hike 3 miles. Before your hike, plan and prepare a nutritious lunch or snack. Enjoy it on your hike, and clean up afterward. Required


Nutritious lunch or snack - Find out if there are allergies from anyone in your group.

Backpack basics - First aid kit, Extra clothing, Rain Gear, Filled Water bottle, Pocketknife, Flashlight, Trail food/snack, Sun protection, Map and compass

#5 Spot it

Describe and identify from photos any poisonous plants and dangerous animals and insects you might encounter on your hike or activity. Required

(We did this before during Bear Den)


How to complete it: 

Do some research on dangerous things in Virginia such as this site.. 

#6  Be a Leader

Perform one of the following leadership roles during your hike: 

  • Trail leader

  • First aid leader

  • Lunch or Snack leader.
