Geographically, Paestum is located in the municipality of Capaccio and occupies a prime position at the center of an area of great tourist importance. Of notable significance is the Archaeological Parks of Paestum, dominated by its majestic temples, which was recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1988. Within the area is also the Archaeological Museum, which houses a rich collection of artifacts primarily of ancient Greek and Lucanian craftsmanship. Among the most significant pieces in the museum are the paintings found in the famous "Tomb of the Diver", the only surviving example of Greek painting from Magna Graecia. This extraordinary fresco depicts a man at the moment he dives into the waves.
But Paestum is not just archaeology: it is also the heart of the Piana del Sele, the birthplace of buffalo mozzarella (mozzarella di bufala), a product of excellence protected by the DOP (Protected Designation of Origin) mark. This cheese is a fundamental ingredient of the Pizza Margherita and a true delicacy. The numerous cheese factories in the area offer guided tours, during which it is possible to taste mozzarella. In the spring, another renowned local product can be savored: the Paestum PGI Artichoke (carciofo di Paestum IGP), an authentic gastronomic treasure of the region.
