San Nicola: History and Views near Palinuro
The earliest historical evidence relating to San Nicola is a 17th-century bell, decorated with a bas-relief depicting the very saint after whom the place is named. This small subdivision of the municipality of Centola saw its inhabited center relocated due to severe landslides that occurred in the early 1960s.
The oldest part of the village still retains the charm of the remaining church ruins, partially destroyed by the landslides, which historical dating suggests goes back to the 1600s. The church itself also bears witness to the presence of the Princes of Sanseverino, who were lords of much of the Cilento region for centuries.
Another element of great interest is the viewpoint, from which one can admire an extraordinary view of Cape Palinuro.
