Why Assess?
Why Assess?
Learning is a process for continuous improvement. Not only does assessments give the student and families information regarding mastering content but also educators use this data to reflect on their instruction and plan accordingly. There are multiple modes of assessment used in Scituate Schools. See below on what tools are used at each level and the purpose of each form of assessment.
Universal Screeners
We use universal screeners to determine students needs and skill gaps. All are nationally normed measures and allow comparison of students with their peers nationwide and schoolwide. Cut-off scores determine the Tiers of Intervention and allow us to differentiate instruction and place students in intervention to improve overall success of students.
Local Assessments
Each content area has formative and summative assessments. Formative assessments are in-class learning checks like quizzes, discussions, on-demand tasks. Summative assessments could be end of unit tests, projects, or products. Summative assessments are usually at the end of a topic or unit.
State Assessments
Please see the RIDE Assessment Data Portal for detailed information on each assessment. Each school will be inviting families for a more in-depth look at student assessment outcomes.
