Remembering Pop Smoke

by Aaban Asif & D'Angelo Canete-Molina (June 2024)

Pop Smoke, also known as Bashar Barakah Jackson, was born in Brooklyn, New York, on July 20, 1999. Pop Smoke was a Muslim and had many hit songs like "Welcome to the Party" and "Dior."

Pop Smoke’s deep voice and sharp lyrics rocketed him to quick success. His first song, "Meet the Woo," and many more songs secured his place in the music business.

Sadly, on February 19, 2020, Pop Smoke was shot and killed during a home invasion in Los Angeles, California. This event ended his life. His impact on the drill genre and effect on hip-hop lasted throughout his career.
