by Guadalupe Benitomartinez, Sophia Talipova, & Sarinah Rehman (Mar. 2024)

Black History Month is an annual celebration observed in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and various other countries worldwide. The month of February was selected due to the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.

February is also significant as the month when the first major celebration marking the end of slavery in the United States occurred. On February 2, 1865, the Union Army decided to take control of Galveston, Texas, and General Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3, which caused all slaves in Texas to be free. This change ended slavery in the United States.

Black History Month began as a week-long event in 1926, later expanding to a month-long celebration in 1976. President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1979.

Black History Month is a time to reflect on the achievements of African Americans and to celebrate their contributions to society. It is also a time to learn about the struggles and challenges that African Americans have faced throughout history. By learning about black history, we can all become more informed and understanding of the experiences of African Americans.
