The Chinese Scholar's Garden at Snug Harbor replicates original Chinese gardens in mainland China dating back to the Ming Dynasty, which was prominent 500-800 years ago. 

• This garden opened in 1999. 

• There are only 2 gardens like this in the United States. 

• This style of garden was a place where scholars would come to relax after prolonged periods of studying. 

• Chinese culture impacts many design elements throughout the garden:

  • There is a unique geometry with many twists and turns, as it is believed that evil spirits traveled in straight lines. 

  • The walls resembled the Great Wall of China and had design elements that were reminiscent of dragons.

•  Entrances to other locations in the garden are shaped like the moon and the sun to represent holidays like Chinese New Year, the Autumn Moon Festival, and the Lunar Festival. 

• There are numerous windows throughout the garden, allowing nature to flow within the complex.

• Many rocks and parts of the garden were imported from China.
