Alice Austen House

The Alice Austen House is the home of a photographer named Alice Austen. She was one of the first photographic journalists, and she used her work to show her beliefs. This site carries a national designation for LGBTQ+ history; however, this part of her legacy has been overlooked and even hidden in the past.

Contemporary Gallery

In addition to showcasing the life and work of Alice Austen, the museum features rotating exhibits of historic and contemporary photography. When we visited, the gallery was displaying Ann Shelton's "worm, root, wort… & bane".

Clear Comfort

Clear Comfort was the name of the home where Alice lived with her family. She grew up here with her mother, grandparents, and aunt. As an adult, she lived here with Gertrude Tate, her partner. This room offers information about Alice's family.
