Designing High Quality Programs

Bilingual Program Description

Bilingual Education Program Descriptions (nyced.org) resource guide provides school leaders with information about the various bilingual education programs available in NYC Public Schools (NYCPS) to make informed decisions that best meet the needs of their school and community. This guide describes each program model so that schools understand the different aspects and considerations for each program. Schools have autonomy in determining the multilingual education model that best fits their needs.

Bilingual Education Building Blocks

Dr. Sonia Soltero has identified nine fundamental building blocks (Building Blocks of Bilingual Education Programs, 2021) found in successful dual language bilingual education programs. These building blocks transcend all bilingual programs and serve as key considerations for school leaders and teams when designing and/or re-envisioning their bilingual education programs. The resources below provide teams with recommendations and tools that can lead to the development of high-quality, sustainable bilingual education programs. Schools should use the tool to plan one year before opening their program, as well as within the first year to strengthen the program.
